No more short acting insulin

I never thought I'd see the day my need for short acting insulin would disappear, but it seems that day has come.😮😎  At least as long as I stay on the keto food plan.  AwaThis is an amazing benefit and huge money saver.😀  Plus I've been able to significantly decrease my long acting insulin.😀😎😀

I've also noticed I don't feel the need to eat nearly as much as I used to.  I'm hungry less often.  When I do eat I feel full after a small amount of food.  I'm eating enough, but I'm not over eating anymore.  This is HUGE for me because I've always had a problem with binge eating and portion control.

I'm amazed at how fast these benefits have kicked in.😮😎  I'm only 9 days into the keto food plan and I'm already feeling significant changes.😀😎💖

Thanks everyone for reading along.  It really helps keep me focused and I feel like my peeps are cheering me on.😎🥂💖

Week one success

Week one I'm down 9 pounds!  It makes the last couple days well worth it 😀

I'm still dizzy and nauseated, but I'm pushing through.  Mojo's been home with me because of the snow and he's been a huge help.  I told him neither of us are enjoying this keto flu I've got, but once it passes we'll both love the results it'll bring 💖🥂

My Daughter tells me every day I'm not fat.  I hug and kiss her and tell her it's more about feeling good than losing weight.  Of course I know that's total hogwash.  I want the weight loss.😋

Now bring on week two.

Very tough day

Today was a rough one, complete with nausea, irritability, and a nasty heachache.  It was terrible timing for a bad day because it was Sunday family day.😥

My physical upset could've been caused by three different factors or a combo of two or all of them.

1.  Last night I went to a friend's 'good bye' party where there was an open bar.  I treated myself to two vodka soda's with 2 lemon twists each.  The drink was very keto friendly.  No carbs and no sugar.  Later I had one glass of chardonnay.  Also fairly keto friendly.  This was the first alcoholic beverage I had since starting keto.  Three drinks in a night wouldn't have phased me before I started keto, but maybe now it's too many?   I won't be drinking any alcohol again for awhile.

2.  I didn't sleep well last night,  and then when I woke I had low blood sugars in the 40s.  Really not good.  I had stayed at my Sister's house so I didn't have my 'go to' blood sugar lifters on hand.  I was in too much of a 'low' to really look for anything keto healthy so I ended up just pouring some orange juice and drinking it up.  Ten ounces of OJ raised my blood sugar just enough.  I went back to sleep for two more hours and woke up with my headache.  Could the massive sugar intake from the OJ be the culprit?  It's the first sugar intake I've had since I started keto six days ago.

3.  Could this be the keto flu I've heard so much about?  I have the headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, and irritability  ALL symptoms of the keto flu.

My body felt like it was working against itself.   At one point I stood up for ten minutes trying to find something and by the time I sat down my body was shaking like a leaf.  This made me anxious and sent me into a panic attack.  It took five minutes of deep breathing for me to calm down.

Shortly after, Mojo, McKenzie, and I went out and saw "A Dog's Way Home".  The ride there was when the nausea really kicked in.  I so wished I had stayed home.  We got into the movie and sat down, and the bright lights off to the side amped up the nausea even more.  I wasn't sure I was gonna make it through the movie and feared I'd end up spending the entire movie in the bathroom.

Around the second half of the movie my stomach settled down enough I was able to enjoy it.  It was actually a very good movie.  I cried in so many parts.  It made me want to go home and hug all my pets and never let them go.💕

On a very bright note, I haven't had to take any short acting insulin for three days😊👍.  I'm definitely decreasing my long acting insulin tonight.  Low blood sugars are horrible.

Tomorrow I'm expecting a much better day.  For the first time in years, I look forward to weighing in.  I really hope the orange juice I had to drink today didn't do much damage🙏.

Week 1 keto challenges.

So far the keto food plan hasn't been difficult, but I haven't had to eat outside of my home.  Now I'm into the weekend and I'm gonna have to face the challenge of eating at a party in a restaurant where heavy appetizers are provided.  I have always   looked forward to this type of event because I'm very much a social eater.  Heavy appetizers have always been my favs.

My plan for this event is to seek out meats, cheeses, and dips.  I can pull the breading off chicken strips and deep fried seafood.  Sliders, I can remove the bread and eat what's inside.  If there's nothing keto friendly provided,  I'll order something from the restaurant.

Lately I fear I'm not eating enough to stay healthy.   My Doctor wants me to eat 15 carbs per meal.  I never eat that many.  Instead it's been more like 7 carbs per meal.  It's hard to eat 15 carbs in a meal and stay within the keto food plan.  I don't want to be kicked out of ketosis.

On a good note, I seem to have found the right dose for my long acting insulin.  I haven't had any lows or highs since my last adjustment.  My blood sugar monitor helps me keep a vigilant eye on my blood sugars.   Now I'm having to take very little of my short acting insulin, which is the best.

Now off to the treadmill.  Thanks to all of you for reading.  It makes the keto challenges a little easier.😀

Keto and type one diabetes

Hey everyone.  My biggest keto fear happened this morning.  My blood sugars ran high yesterday so I increased my long acting insulin.  This morning I was awoken to my continuous blood sugar monitor alerting me to a 'low blood sugar' reading.  I wanted to ignore it and just hope for my blood sugars to spike back up on their own, but of course no such luck.  They got down to 48 and I had to eat some sugar.  This is the worst thing ever on a Keto diet.😒

I ate 10 Skippy's peanut butter bites since peanut butter has some good fats in it.  I was able to stop myself after 10 of these yummy bites because I'm so focused on staying in ketosis.

10 peanut butter bites have 15 carbs.  My Endocrinologist wants me to eat 15 carbs at every meal to help keep my blood sugars stable.  I've fallen well under that since I started Keto 4 days ago.  Hopefully the sugar content in the bites won't kick me out of ketoses.  Such a fine line.

My blood sugars are now at 120 so I'm off to walk on the treadmill.  Here's to hoping for no more low blood sugar readings.🙏😂👍

Learning curb

Hey everyone.  I'm on Day 3 of my Keto journey, which is leading me to my new Keto lifestylebiggrin   The beginning has been a learning curb for sure, especially with the added task of managing type one diabetes with a low carb/no sugar diet.  What artificial sweetners are keto friendly, and which ones aren't?  Are carbs sneaking into my food regimen?   Labels can be tricky.  Sugar alcohols?  WTH are those????  I read an article  on google stating pickles and cucumbers are not keto friendly because of the lectons they carry.  They are a fruit with seeds.  Members in my keto group say they definitely ARE keto friendly, and many have lost lots of weight eating them on a daily bases.

This week has been trial and error.  I've decreased my long acting insulin, and now I'm running a little high.  Will fix this tonight.  On the bright side, I haven't had any low readings.  No sugar needed!

Of all the rotten times for a bad cough to come on.  I'm having a difficult time finding a sugar free cough drop with a keto friendly artificial sweetner.  I'm gargling with salt water, have vicks vaper rub on my chest, and drank a little pickle juice.  The pickle juice really did seem to help.

As crappy as I feel, I am not giving up my treadmill workouts.  I'm supposed to take it easy with exersise over the first few weeks, but I think a brisk walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes a day should be fine.   Walking on the treadmill makes me happy.biggrin

On a different note, I just found out I can only get 15 pages for free on this blog site so I'll be moving to another one.  I know bloggers is totally free and they don't limit your use.  I'll try and copy these pages and paste them on my new site.

Thanks to everyone who's been reading along.  It helps keep me focused and motivated.  You all ROCK!

My Keto journey begins

Today marks day one of my Keto journey.  I'm in the 'honeymoon' stage for sure.  I'm super excited to leave the crackers, pastas, pototatoes, and all the other bad carbs behind.  I walked on the treadmill for 35 minutes this morning for the first time in a year and a half and it felt so good!  It literally made me happy inside.

I know the day will come when I'll want to eat pancakes and I won't want to walk on the treadmill, and that's when the true challenge will begin.

I weighed in today at 213 pounds.  This is the heaviest I've been since I was pregnant with my 8 year old.   I would have been devastated if I didn't know that number is very temporary.  This is the heaviest I'll ever be.  By pool season, I hope to be down a good 40 pounds.

I've already made one keto mistake.  I love sparkling water and sometimes want some flavor, so I bought a pack of 24 kirkland signature flavored sparkling waters from Costco.  I saw it has 0 calories and automatically thought it was keto friendly.   Since then I've learned surrculos isn't keto friendly, and this sparkling water is sweetened with it.  Now I have 24 bottles of sparkling water I'm afraid to drink.  I need to become better at reading nutritional information before purchasing.

I am a work in progress.

My starting weight is 213 LBS
My final goal weight is 150 LBS.
My first first goal weight is 100 LBS.
